Farm Facilities for the Future - the winning vote!

Last night Swansea Community Farm was alive with excitement after being presented with a cheque for £60,000 from Jubilee’s People’s Millions.  The Farm went head to head with another charity in Wales on Tuesday and the result was announced live on ITV Wales news last night.

Talking about the win; Community Development Manager, Kari Lucas said: ‘Winning this competition has meant so much to us, yet taking part has meant more than we ever expected.

‘Getting out and about to shout about the competition offered us a chance to really get feedback from people living and working in Swansea. The positive response of people outside the local supermarket, the offer of support from Swansea centre shoppers at the weekend, the general buzz in the local community and the assistance of partner organisations has been outstanding.

‘Winning the People's Millions will enable the Farm to transform a currently redundant building into a new café, office space, reception area, disabled toilet and activity space.  Developing this space will also release current buildings to be transformed into an education centre, training room/workshop and volunteer hub.’

Volunteer, 45 year old Mike Melville commented: ‘I have been coming here for the last 3 years and the Farm has transformed my life.  I was introduced to the farm by my occupational therapist a year after I was housebound, and the Farm is such an excellent facility for disabled people like me.  Being part of this competition has been a very exciting couple of weeks for me and the team.’

Phil Budd, Education and Sustainability Manager at the Farm said: ‘We have been extremely overwhelmed by the support we have received from people across Swansea.  Winning this is key to the Farm's future sustainability as the improved facilities will enable us to enhance current activities, expand our services and introduce income generating activities so we can earn our own money to re-invest for the community’s benefit.’

‘We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support over the last few weeks and for the all important votes - it has meant so much to everyone here at Swansea Community Farm – THANK YOU EVERYONE!’
